Getting indexed on Google and other search engines is one of the most effective ways to get traffic to your website. In order to do so, you need to submit your website to search engines.  Let’s learn about the different steps you need to follow to submit to search engines.

Why Should You Submit Websites to Search Engines?

Google and other search engines do not depend on manual submissions. Instead, they primarily rely on crawling to discover new websites and pages. The Google bots continually scan known websites for new links leading to fresh content. If a link leads to something useful, that page is then indexed.

Therefore, search engines are adept at autonomously locating new websites, provided they are linked to other web sources. However, there are compelling reasons to manually submit your website to search engines:

  • Assurance: In terms of search engine optimization (SEO), It is better to be safe than sorry. Given the quick and straightforward process of manual web submission, it is a proactive step worth taking.
  • Direct Communication: Submitting your site directly informs search engines like Google about essential details concerning your site, particularly regarding content updates and significant changes.
  • Opportunity for Improvement: Manual submission grants access to various tools that can aid in enhancing your website’s performance. Additionally, you can prompt search engines to recrawl your updated content, ensuring it reflects the latest changes.

How to Submit to Search Engines?

Google and Bing both discontinued that URL submission tool in 2018. The only way to submit your website to search engines is to submit your site map. you can usually find your site map at one of the following URLs:

  • yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml
  • yourwebsite.com/sitemap\_index.xml

If you cannot see your sitemap there, check your robots.txt file at yourwebsite.com/robots.txt.  Most websites list the location of their side maps here. However, if you still do not find your sitemap, then you have to create one before you can continue. You can create a sitemap manually by creating an XML file with a relevant HTML code. Then, you can use a sitemap validator to avoid handing in an invalid site map and hampering your site. Alternatively, you can use an online generator to create a sitemap or install the YoastSEO plugin to create it if you are using WordPress. After this, submit your sitemap to Google Search Console.

You also need to check if Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools have been implemented. Start by setting up Google search control and verifying website ownership. To verify your website, copy the DNS TXT record and add it to your domain name provider to verify domain ownership. Verifying your site with the DNS record is one of the recommended methods as you can leave the DNS record forever and it does not add extra code to your site.

Setting up Webmaster Tools with Bing is straightforward. If you have already configured Google Search Console, you can easily import your side here. After signing up, simply click the Import button. This streamlined process allows for the seamless integration of your website into Bing Webmaster Tools.

Now that you have completed all the necessary setup, it is time to initiate the submission of your site to measure such engines.

Steps to Submit Your Website to Google

Follow the below steps to submit to Google:

Step 1: Locate your XML sitemap or create one if you do not have one.

Step 2: Open up Google Search Console and under Index, select “Sitemaps.” Now paste in your sitemap URL and hit Submit. If you have more than one sitemap, just repeat the process until all your sitemaps are listed in the submitted section.

Step 3: Verify your site to the Google search console to complete this process.

Steps to Submit a Page URL to Google

Completing a page URL submission to search engines is also a pretty simple process.

Step 1: In the Google search console, go to “URL inspection” and paste the page URL that you want.

If the page is not indexed you will see a “URL is not on Google” response. To get it crawled, just click on “Request Indexing.” If the page is indexed you will see a “URL is on Google” response. If you have recently updated content and want Google to recrawl the page, you can also click on “Request Indexing” to index those page changes.

Steps to Submit a URL to Google My Business

Submitting a business website to Google My Business (GMB) can significantly enhance traffic, as this free tool prominently displays Business details at the top of search results. Submitting a URL to this platform is essential for driving traffic to your website visits, especially because of its Search and Maps functionalities. When users search for a service within proximity to your business location, the search engine actively promotes your company.

Furthermore, this tool is user-friendly, making it suitable for all businesses of all sizes. To submit your company’s profile and URL to Google, follow these steps:

Step 1: Create your profile by entering your business name and selecting the appropriate category.

Step 2:  Provide your location details and select the region accordingly.

Step 3: Include contact information, such as your phone number and website URL.

Step 4: Other steps are optional and can be adjusted later. After this, there will be a verification process that entails adding your business mailing address.

Moreover, there is an option for customers on your profile to incorporate all pertinent business information:

  • Business Hours: Specify the operation hours of your business.
  • Messaging: Utilize an option and messaging tool to engage with customers directly.
  • Business Description: Craft a concise description of your business, with a maximum limit of 750 characters.
  • Business Photos: Enhance your profile with images showcasing your business or products.

How to Check If Your Page Is on Google?

  • To see if your site has been successfully indexed, you need to search your web address on Google. If Google has crawled and indexed your site, then it will show up in the search results.
  • You can copy a paragraph or two of text from your side and search for that in quotation marks. If your page is on Google, then it will come up.

Steps to Submit Your Website to Yahoo

To get your website on Yahoo, you need to submit your sites to Bing. By submitting your website to Bing, it automatically submits to Yahoo as well.

How to Check if Your Site is Indexed?

You can conduct a Google search using “site:yourwebsite.com.”  However, This method is unreliable and does not provide a definitive confirmation of whether a site or page is indexed or not. Utilizing the tools offered by search engines themselves is the sole dependable approach to assessing indexing status.

  • For Google, navigate to the “Coverage report” within the Search Console, then select the “Valid” tab. Subsequently, click on one of the lists under details to view indexed URLs. To verify the status of a specific URL, utilize the URL Inspection tool.
  • For Bing, utilize their site’s Explorer Feature and filter the results by index URLs. This allows you to explore all the pages on your site that have been indexed. To check individual pages, use their URL Inspection tool.

How to Fix Indexing Issues?

When encountering issues with website or web page indexing, the initial step is to identify the underlying cause. It is essential to comprehend the nature of the problem before attempting to address it effectively. To achieve this, input the URL into Google’s URL Inspection tool and check the coverage error.

Here are some of the common issues identified in Search Console and their implications:

  • Excluded by “Noindex” Tag: This indicates that Google is prevented from indexing the page due to a noindex robots meta tag.  if the page requires to be indexed, remove this tag from the page.
  • Blocked by Robots.txt:  if a page is blocked in robots.txt, Google cannot crawl it. If the page is meant to be indexed, eliminate this block from robots.txt.
  • Pages with Redirect: Pages with redirects are not indexed by Google. To prevent redirection of a page, remove the redirect if it should not be applied.
  • Duplicate Content Without User- Selected Canonical: This happens when Google identifies a page as duplicate content and chooses to index what was perceived to be the canonical version. Although this is typically not problematic, further investigation is required if you believe the page should be indexed differently.

How to Increase Website Visibility After Indexing?

Increasing website visibility post indexing requires more than just getting indexed by search engines. It entails optimizing content for SEO and ensuring its quality. Achieving a higher rank on search engine results pages (SERPs) can significantly enhance traffic flow, especially considering that the top three organic search results garner about 75% of search traffic.

To increase visibility, consider sharing content across social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for broader promotion. Additionally, utilize newsletters to regularly engage your audience and drive clicks to your site. Targeting relevant keywords and integrating them strategically into titles, URLs, and headings can further attract traffic.

Building backlinks, optimizing metadata, and analyzing competitors’ strategies are also crucial steps. Regularly monitoring analytics to understand audience behavior and refining strategies accordingly is also essential. Moreover, ensure mobile friendliness, update your contact regularly, and incorporate visual elements like images and videos to increase visibility and engagement to your website.

Conclusion

It provides the search engines with extra indexing data, therefore efficiently signaling search engines about content updates and changes.
