Getting indexed on Google and other search engines is one of the most effective ways to get traffic to your website. In order to do so, you need to submit your website to search engines.  Let’s learn about the different steps you need to follow to submit to search engines.

Why Should You Submit Websites to Search Engines?

Google and other search engines do not depend on manual submissions. Instead, they primarily rely on crawling to discover new websites and pages. The Google bots continually scan known websites for new links leading to fresh content. If a link leads to something useful, that page is then indexed.

Therefore, search engines are adept at autonomously locating new websites, provided they are linked to other web sources. However, there are compelling reasons to manually submit your website to search engines:

  • Assurance: In terms of search engine optimization (SEO), It is better to be safe than sorry. Given the quick and straightforward process of manual web submission, it is a proactive step worth taking.
  • Direct Communication: Submitting your site directly informs search engines like Google about essential details concerning your site, particularly regarding content updates and significant changes.
  • Opportunity for Improvement: Manual submission grants access to various tools that can aid in enhancing your website’s performance. Additionally, you can prompt search engines to recrawl your updated content, ensuring it reflects the latest changes.

How to Submit to Search Engines?

Google and Bing both discontinued that URL submission tool in 2018. The only way to submit your website to search engines is to submit your site map. you can usually find your site map at one of the following URLs:

  • yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml
  • yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml

If you cannot see your sitemap there, check your robots.txt file at yourwebsite.com/robots.txt.  Most websites list the location of their side maps here. However, if you still do not find your sitemap, then you have to create one before you can continue. You can create a sitemap manually by creating an XML file with a relevant HTML code. Then, you can use a sitemap validator to avoid handing in an invalid site map and hampering your site. Alternatively, you can use an online generator to create a sitemap or install the YoastSEO plugin to create it if you are using WordPress. After this, submit your sitemap to Google Search Console.

You also need to check if Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools have been implemented. Start by setting up Google search control and verifying website ownership. To verify your website, copy the DNS TXT record and add it to your domain name provider to verify domain ownership. Verifying your site with the DNS record is one of the recommended methods as you can leave the DNS record forever and it does not add extra code to your site.

Setting up Webmaster Tools with Bing is straightforward. If you have already configured Google Search Console, you can easily import your side here. After signing up, simply click the Import button. This streamlined process allows for the seamless integration of your website into Bing Webmaster Tools.

How to Fix Indexing Issues?

When encountering issues with website or web page indexing, the initial step is to identify the underlying cause. It is essential to comprehend the nature of the problem before attempting to address it effectively. To achieve this, input the URL into Google’s URL Inspection tool and check the coverage error.

Here are some of the common issues identified in Search Console and their implications:

  • Excluded by “Noindex” Tag: This indicates that Google is prevented from indexing the page due to a noindex robots meta tag.  if the page requires to be indexed, remove this tag from the page.
  • Blocked by Robots.txt:  if a page is blocked in robots.txt, Google cannot crawl it. If the page is meant to be indexed, eliminate this block from robots.txt.
  • Pages with Redirect: Pages with redirects are not indexed by Google. To prevent redirection of a page, remove the redirect if it should not be applied.
  • Duplicate Content Without User- Selected Canonical: This happens when Google identifies a page as duplicate content and chooses to index what was perceived to be the canonical version. Although this is typically not problematic, further investigation is required if you believe the page should be indexed differently.
